but now there are countries of equal importance, syria, egypt, iran, saudi arabia. everybody now has a big thing happening in their country. does that put more pressure now on the leaders of israel and the palestinians to come together and bang their heads together, get a deal done? >> i think so. the world focuses more on 130 palestinians killed, half of them terrorists, than 30,000 syrians, most of them civilians, killed by the assad government, and focus has been taken away from iran, which poses the greatest exstential threat, to the whole region this is a good time to sit down, try to negotiate what everybody knows would be the best solution for both parties it will not solve the hamas/gaza problem. but we can address the west bank problem. >> everybody seems to be nodding. a good moment to leave this for now. thank you, all, very much indeed. >> thank you. >> right back after a short break. e a lot of money. but today...( sfx: loud noise of metal object hitting the ground) things have been a little strange. centrum, always your most complete. >>> let's turn to syria. syria is a huge flashpoint at the moment in the middle east. there is a belief that a lot of the assad military are using weapons they've got from iran. is that true? and how long will you continue to support assad, given the appalling conditions, the humanitarian catastrophe that we are all watching? at what point do you, the president of iran, say enough of this violence? >> translator: i do believe that we must all say enough of this violence right now. six months ago i said enough of this violence. our opinion, vis-a-vis the issue of syria and other nations, is completely clear. we do believe that freedom, the right to choose, the right to vote, respect and justice is the fundamental right of all people. all people must obtain these rights. no one has the right to restrict a people and nation, but we believe, as a friend of nations, we must help the nations around the world to obtain these rights through peaceful paths, through peaceful actions, and we have worked hard. i am now h

pakistan still, obviously iran, number one, syria, what the hell is going to happen in syria, libya's not settled. the instability is widespread and i think one of the problems here is for the obama administration, particularly in a second term, what's the theory of the case, what's the overall foreign policy. what happens, they go from crisis management to crisis management. you're never going to get a one size fits all in terms of the policy but people need to know what the united states stands for. i think the president now, after winning re-election, has moral authority in the world to a certain extent and he maybe needs to use that and develop these relationships with the leaders. clearly with prime minister netanyahu, there is not a relationship of trust. there should be, and one should be built. >> president obama's currently on a tour of asia. some people think he should come back and deal with what they see as the more pressing issue of israel and the palestinians. what is your view? >> again, that's crisis management. while he's in asia, beforehand and now they need to figur

you have syria up in flames and so on. it's a dangerous cocktail, isn't it? >> that's precisely it. there isn't actually a war going on in gaza by which i mean if there is a war it's a very one-sided war. the israelis will win. they have massive superiority. they have done this before and the hamas will fire rockets and can keep firing them but these are very ineffective. they don't do much damage to the israelis. they cause the israeli civilians to cower in fear and understandably is something the israelis have to react to but the danger here is that egypt and israel had a peace treaty that was the cornerstone of middle east stability. you have a new government. how will they react to this? the turks almost cut off relations with israel because of gaza, the embargo. the turks were trying to resupply them. so it's all these new pieces. for most of the last 50 years, israel has when it has found peace with the arabs has found them at the top level with the dictators. it has made peace with the princes. now it's going to have to try to figure out what happens when the people are in ch
